Sad news: In Aston Villa’s loss against Tottenham, Micah Richards criticizes Unai Emery doing something “weird.”

Micah Richards has questioned Unai Emery after Aston Villa’s defeat to Tottenham.

Emery made a surprise call with his line-up against Spurs at Villa Park on Sunday, with Matty Cash playing from the right wing and Youri Tielemans from the left as Leon Bailey supported Ollie Watkins in attack. His decision didn’t pay off as Villa lost 4-0, with Tottenham scoring all of their goals in the second half and Villa captain John McGinn also being sent off.

Fourth-placed Villa are now just two points above Spurs in fifth place, in the race to finish in the top four and qualify for the Champions League. And speaking on Sky Sports after the final whistle, Richards said: “I think they’ll be able to regroup, no doubt.

They’ve been excellent so far this season and they’ve had a few dodgy results. The way Emery set them up today was a bit strange but they’ll bounce back for sure.

“I think you have to adjust to who you’re playing against, especially when Spurs have the likes of Pedro Porro and Udogie on the wings who like to get forward. They had to adjust, it didn’t work out for them today although it did up until half-time.”

On McGinn’s dismissal, Richards added: “I don’t think he can have too many complaints about this. I’ve played with him, he’s not that sort of lad, obviously he was very frustrated with how the game was going. I think we have to be honest about the situation, and there’s no attempt to play the ball, it’s a red card.”
