Rothwell was speaking after Southampton’s dramatic 4-2 victory over Sunderland on Saturday in which the Bournemouth loanee came off the bench to score two late goals and win the game.

The victory kept Southampton very much in touch with the three sides above them after their recent blip, nine adrift of Leicester City, six behind Leeds, and five below Ipswich.

All three sides are setting a standard that has never been seen before at this level and it is highly likely that all four will comfortably surpass the 90-point mark.

Speaking to southamptonfc.com at the weekend, Rothwell hailed the current promotion race as absolutely ‘crazy’ and acknowledged the importance of taking advantage on the rare occasion one of the sides drop points.

Rothwell hails ‘crazy’ promotion race

He said: “This league is just crazy! The four teams that are up there are putting up numbers that probably will never be seen again. If one team slips up you know another will be there to take full advantage of that and obviously that happened today.”

It has been an incredible race so far and there certainly will be plenty of twists and turns to come, with Ipswich’s unbelievable stoppage time defeat at Cardiff City arguably the biggest yet.

Leeds have had to be patient in their pursuit of actually being in a top two position, with the gap at the turn of the New Year having been an incredible 17 points to Leicester. However, they are now just three adrift of the Foxes and know a win by two or more goals against Millwall would put them top of the league heading into the international break.

Leeds won’t particularly care either way whether they go up in first or second place, but to have dragged Leicester back into it could be important.
